ABOUT

Sebastien Boko,

Sebastien Boko has a hereditary knowledge and passion for wood. It is a family belief that the blood mixes with the sap and is imbued into the work. Indeed, after his studies, it was at his father's workshop in Zogbodomey in Benin that he began learning to carve wood.
In 2009, he met other artists and worked along side them for several years. These formative years as well as the sculptural residences in which he has participated have fed the development of his work considerably. Although the sculpture is his main profession, Boko doesn't hesitate to express himself through other forms including performances, installations, slam poetry, and music which explains the diversity and uniqueness of his work.
While developing a work on the theme VEILS he has produced a sculptural series with a mixture of materials such as wood, metal and symbolistic objects of mixed media including padlocks and sections of chains. During his career so far, he has participated in exhibitions and symposiums in Benin, Austria, Switzerland, Turkey, China, Japan, Tanzania, Senegal, Mali, Ivory Coast and Togo.

Covering the body is an instinctive human nature.

Covering the body is an instinctive human nature. For people from certain communities, veiling is compulsory. In African culture in general and for Benin in particular, "Veils" are expressed through the use of masks. This series is informed and inspired by many of these including the masks from Gèlèdè, Egungun, Zangbéto, followers of Vodun. The works in this series are conceptual abstractions of "veils’ which use different symbolism to express these ideas. It is as though there is a big veil separating us from the mystery of life. In quest for POWER humans have veiled themselves, sometimes in the face of their own weaknesses. We do not reveal everything to others, and everything is not revealed to us.

For me, "Veils" represents the distance between the present and the future, visually using the aesthetic of everyday life. Some works also speak about the connection to tradition, travel, hypocrisy, religion, indifference and freedom. The idea of ‘Veils’ is an ongoing and evolving topic I am exploring in my work as seen in the following series: WOMEN VEILED, MILITARIES, GUÈLÈDÈ MASK, EGUN EGUN MASK, VEILS, TRAVELERS, AFRICAN MISS, etc...
